Common Cause of Low Back Pain

chiropractic-care-back-acheYour Low Back Pain Is From Slipped Joints, Not Slipped Discs

Many people experiencing lower back pain are told it is from a bad disc and need medications, injections or surgery. However, research has proven that those having low back pain in reality have spinal joint problems.

This article will explain what is the cause of most lower back pain and what can be done about it.

Let’s, initially, put to bed and extinguish the idea that lower back pain is caused by a bad disc. A recent study performed at the Mayo Clinic and published in The American Journal of Neuroradiology confirms that MRI scans showing intervertebral disc problems are not the source of back pain. The researchers found that MRI scans showing disc problems are exceedingly common in pain free people. In other words, people who have no lower back pain can have an MRI that can show a disc bulge, protrusion and degeneration and still have no pain.

back-injury-painThe researchers said that their study indicates that findings of narrowing of the disk space, disc degeneration, loss of disc height and other disc abnormalities are part of the normal aging process rather than pathological processes requiring intervention. They went further to say that most of the disk degenerative changes are no more significant than gray hair or crow’s feet around the eyes.

Let’s also clarify the term “slipped disc.” Medically a disc does not slip back and forth. It can bulge, protrude, herniate or degenerate. It does not slip back and forth or slip out of place. Slipped disc is a layman’s term similar to trick knee, cauliflower ear or double-jointed.

Simple Tips to Managing Holiday Stress

christmas-shoppingLetting Go Of Perfect: One Major Tool For Managing Holiday Stress

One of the main reasons that many people experience so much holiday stress is that they have expectations that do not match reality and they keep trying to nudge reality to be more in line with their expectations.

The Holidays do not have to be perfect to be happy, merry, or enjoyable.

When you try to spend more resources than you have, you will experience stress. When you attempt to juggle spending your time, energy and money to try to find the perfect gift for each person, to plan and execute the perfect meal, and to host the perfect party with each guest enjoying every other guest, (plus the numerous other tasks you take on), you will be exhausted and disappointed. If you can settle for less than perfect, you can reduce your stress.

christmas-cards-decoratingHere are some examples of sanity saving shifts in thinking and behavior:

Instead of spending all that time and energy shopping for the perfect outfit to wear on Christmas or to that big Christmas party, consider adding a new holiday accessory to something that you that you already own, love and feel comfortable in.

That “perfect” Christmas card that you spent so much time and energy on last year is probably not remembered this year. The fact that you sent a Christmas card probably will be remembered. Don’t torture yourself for a Christmas card. Allocate your resources of time, energy and money according to your real needs and values.

When you feel compelled to keep spending until you feel assured of getting that certain someone’s attention, remind yourself that you don’t have to spend money that you don’t have or can ill afford to spend to let someone know that they matter.

holiday-expensesRemember that the amount you spend does not necessarily determine the quality of the gift. It might also help to remember that if you don’t spend outside your budget, you probably won’t have to be paying additional credit card expenses throughout the coming year.

When you feel obliged as a good neighbor, co-worker, friend, son/daughter, mother/father, or community member, to participate in all activities and get-togethers that you are invited to, you will end up exhausted and resentful. This is the time of year when you may have more invitations and social expectations than at any other time. When you are stressed out, these invitations can feel like demands for your time and attention.

When you can begin to believe that even “nice” people say “no” to some invitations, and allow yourself to do so, you can reduce a lot of stress.

bedroom-organization-feng-shui10 Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Whether you have a physically demanding job, lead a hectic lifestyle or spend all day anchored to a chair at an office desk, we all understand the importance of getting a good night’s sleep.

Rest replenishes our minds and our bodies and is necessary for healthy functioning. It helps to regulate our mood, improves our memory and strengthens our learning capabilities.

However, for a lot of us, getting a good night’s sleep is often easier said than done, as our daily lifestyles don’t always allow us the time needed to have an optimal rest. For this reason, we’ve developed a quick and easy guide to help everyone enjoy a more adequate bedtime slumber.

Delving into the science behind sleep reveals that it is largely controlled by biological rhythms, known as circadian rhythms, which play an important role in determining our sleep patterns. These rhythms are in turn governed by our body’s master clock which is responsible for producing melatonin, a hormone that makes us feel drowsy and helps to lower our body temperature.

jogging-at-the-beachUnderstanding the mechanics behind sleep has enabled us to create a list of things we can all do on a daily basis to help encourage a more effective sleep:

Do some exercise at the beginning of your day – this helps to fortify your body’s cortisol rhythm, which is greater during early mornings. Cortisol is an important hormone that activates the body’s anti-stress and anti-inflammatory functions

Expose yourself to some sunlight – our skin contains photoreceptors that help balance the levels of serotonin and melatonin in our bodies

Adjust smartphone brightness levels – engage the night time settings on your smartphone which decrease screen brightness levels at night
